NMI Holdings Inc. is a US mortgage insurance company whose main operating subsidiary, National Mortgage Insurance Corporation, provides private mortgage guaranty insurance for residential home loans. Its products are used by mortgage lenders and investors to reduce credit risk when borrowers make down payments below the level typically required to avoid mortgage insurance. By covering a portion of losses if a borrower defaults, NMI helps lenders originate loans that can be sold into the secondary mortgage market or held with improved risk protection.
The company serves a broad range of mortgage originators, including national and regional mortgage banks, large financial institutions, credit unions, community banks, builder-affiliated lenders, online lenders and other non-bank mortgage companies. In addition to primary mortgage insurance, NMI Holdings offers related services such as contract underwriting and loan review support, helping lenders assess whether loans meet eligibility and credit standards.
NMI Holdings operates in a cyclical industry closely tied to US housing activity, mortgage rates, home prices, borrower credit performance and regulatory standards. Demand for its insurance generally reflects the volume of low-down-payment mortgage lending, while profitability depends on premium income, claims experience, capital strength and reinsurance arrangements. The company competes with other private mortgage insurers as well as government-backed mortgage insurance programs. Its role in the housing finance system is to provide credit enhancement that supports access to home ownership while transferring part of the default risk away from lenders and mortgage investors.
