Roku, Inc. is a connected television platform company best known for the Roku operating system, streaming players and Roku-branded smart TVs. Its software is designed to make streaming video easy to access across a wide range of services, including subscription apps, free ad-supported channels, live television options and transactional content. The company says its platform serves more than 100 million streaming households and generated 145 billion streaming hours in 2025, underscoring its scale in the shift from traditional pay-TV to internet-delivered entertainment.
Roku’s business extends beyond hardware sales. Its operating system is built into devices sold by Roku and into smart TVs made by manufacturing partners that license Roku technology or branding. This gives the company a broad presence in US living rooms, where it says Roku is the leading streaming TV operating system and reaches more than half of broadband households.
The company’s platform revenue is central to its investment case. Roku earns advertising income from video ads and sponsored placements, receives distribution and revenue-share fees from streaming services, and monetises subscriptions purchased through its interface. It also operates The Roku Channel, a free, ad-supported streaming television service that combines on-demand films and shows with live linear channels. By controlling the user interface, advertising inventory and content discovery layer, Roku occupies a strategic position between viewers, advertisers, TV manufacturers and streaming publishers.
