Essential Utilities (WTRG)

The company’s water and wastewater operations are central to its identity. They include drinking water treatment, distribution systems, wastewater collection, and related infrastructure needed by residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers. Its largest water service area is in Pennsylvania, including suburban communities around Philadelphia, giving Essential a meaningful presence in a region where infrastructure investment, rate regulation, and system reliability are key priorities.

Essential Utilities expanded beyond water through the acquisition of Peoples, adding regulated natural gas distribution to its business mix. That gas segment serves hundreds of thousands of customers and provides a second regulated earnings stream, although the company has also taken steps to simplify its portfolio, including divesting its West Virginia gas utility and much of its nonregulated activity in 2024.

As a regulated utility, Essential’s growth is closely tied to capital investment in pipes, treatment facilities, safety upgrades, environmental compliance, and acquisitions of municipal or private utility systems. Returns are determined through state regulatory processes, which makes rate cases, allowed returns, customer affordability, and capital spending plans important factors for investors.

The company is also involved in a proposed all-stock merger with American Water Works, under which Essential shareholders would own a minority stake in the combined business if the transaction closes as planned. Until then, WTRG remains a utility stock centred on essential infrastructure, regulated cash flows, and long-term system investment.
