Sítě LEO jsou navrženy tak, aby nabízely širokopásmové služby s nižší latencí než tradiční systémy GEO, a projekt Lightspeed má cílit na podnikové, telekomunikační, vládní, letecké, námořní a další profesionální trhy, nikoli pouze na spotřebitelský broadband. Projekt staví Telesat do konkurenčního segmentu satelitního odvětví, kde jsou důležitými odlišujícími faktory rozsah, práva ke spektru, realizace startů a zákaznické kontrakty.
Telesat působí mezinárodně, přičemž Kanada zůstává jejím nejdůležitějším zdrojem tržeb. Jeho role na trhu je specifická tím, že kombinuje dlouhodobě fungující byznys v oblasti GEO satelitů se snahou přejít ke konektivitě nové generace v síti LEO a obsluhovat zákazníky, kteří vyžadují bezpečnou, odolnou a geograficky rozsáhlou komunikační kapacitu.
