General Motors Company (GM)
NYSEMarket Closed
General Motors Company is one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world, with a business centered on designing, producing, selling, and financing cars, trucks, crossovers, and commercial vehicles. The company was formed in its current structure after the 2009 bankruptcy and restructuring of the former General Motors Corporation. It operates through GM North America, GM International, and GM Financial, its captive finance arm.
In the United States, GM’s core vehicle brands are Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick. Chevrolet gives the company broad exposure to mainstream cars, trucks, and SUVs, while GMC focuses heavily on trucks and utility vehicles. Cadillac serves the premium segment, and Buick has an important role in select international markets. GM’s North American profitability is closely linked to pickup trucks and large SUVs, including models built on shared vehicle platforms.
GM Financial provides vehicle loans, leases, and dealer financing, supporting retail sales and giving the company another source of earnings tied to credit conditions, used-vehicle values, and interest rates. Internationally, GM remains active in selected markets, though its footprint is more focused than it was before restructuring.
The company is also investing in electrification, battery technology, software-defined vehicles, and driver-assistance systems. Its autonomous vehicle subsidiary Cruise previously tested and operated robotaxi services in geofenced US cities, but GM is shifting emphasis toward driver-assistance and personal autonomous vehicle applications after safety and regulatory setbacks. GM’s competitive profile reflects its manufacturing scale, strong US dealer network, truck leadership, finance operations, and ongoing transition from traditional internal-combustion vehicles toward electric and software-enabled mobility.
