Meta Platforms (META)

Meta Platforms, Inc. is one of the world’s largest technology companies and the owner of a global social networking and messaging ecosystem. Its core business is the Family of Apps, which includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. These services connect billions of people and businesses, supporting activities such as personal communication, community building, entertainment, creator publishing, customer service, and online commerce. The scale of this user base gives Meta one of the most important distribution networks in the digital economy.
Advertising is the company’s primary source of revenue. Meta offers marketers tools to reach audiences across its apps, using data signals, ranking systems, and ad measurement products to help businesses target campaigns and assess performance. Its platforms are especially significant for small and medium-sized businesses, many of which use Facebook and Instagram pages, messaging, reels, and shops to build customer relationships without needing a standalone digital infrastructure.
Beyond its advertising franchise, Meta invests heavily in artificial intelligence, recommendation systems, infrastructure, and immersive computing. Its Reality Labs division develops virtual reality and augmented reality hardware, software, and services, including Quest devices and metaverse-related technologies. This business remains much smaller than the Family of Apps and requires substantial investment, but it reflects Meta’s ambition to shape the next generation of social and computing platforms.
The company operates in a competitive and highly scrutinised sector. Its results are affected by digital ad spending, user engagement, privacy rules, app store policies, content regulation, and competition from other social, video, and messaging platforms. Meta’s distinctive strength is the combination of global scale, deep engagement, advanced ad technology, and ownership of several of the most widely used apps in the world.
