Vistra Corp. is an integrated power company that combines large-scale electricity generation with a substantial retail energy business. Headquartered in Texas, the company is one of the largest competitive power producers in the United States and serves residential, commercial, and industrial customers through retail brands including TXU Energy, Ambit Energy, and others.
Its generation fleet spans natural gas, nuclear, coal, solar, and battery storage, giving Vistra exposure to several major segments of the US power market. The company owns about 44 gigawatts of generation capacity, led by natural gas plants, alongside 6.5 gigawatts of nuclear capacity, 8.7 gigawatts of coal capacity, and a smaller but growing base of solar and storage assets. The planned Cogentrix acquisition adds a further 5.5 gigawatts of gas-fired generation, strengthening its position in dispatchable power.
Vistra is particularly important in Texas, where it serves nearly a third of electricity consumers, but its retail operations extend across 20 states and reach around 5 million customers. This retail base helps balance the volatility of wholesale power markets by linking generation with end-user demand.
The company traces its current form to the 2016 emergence of Energy Future Holdings from bankruptcy, after which Vistra became a standalone public company. Since then, it has used acquisitions, fleet optimization, and capital returns to reshape itself as a major independent energy platform. Its investment case is closely tied to US electricity demand, grid reliability, commodity prices, and the transition from legacy fossil-fuel assets toward lower-carbon and flexible generation.
