Steem (STEEM)
Steem is a blockchain network built for social publishing, community curation, and cryptocurrency-based rewards. Its best-known application, Steemit, combines elements of blogging platforms, Reddit-style voting, and long-form content networks, but replaces traditional advertising-driven incentives with token rewards distributed through the Steem protocol.
The project is designed around the idea that users who create, discover, and rank valuable content should share in the economic value of the network. Posts and comments can receive votes from other participants, and those votes influence how rewards are allocated. The system also supports downvotes, giving the community a way to reduce the visibility or reward potential of spam, abuse, or low-quality material. Voting power is weighted by stake, so users with more Steem-based influence can have a greater impact on curation outcomes.
STEEM is the network’s core cryptocurrency and is used within this social economy. The broader Steem ecosystem has included applications for blogging, video, communities, and other content-led services, with DTube historically emerging as a blockchain-oriented alternative for video publishing. The network’s origins are closely associated with figures from the BitShares ecosystem, including Dan Larimer.
Steem’s model is distinctive because it turns attention, publishing, and moderation into on-chain economic activity. At the same time, the platform has faced familiar challenges for open content networks, including plagiarism, reward farming, and disputes over whether stake-weighted governance produces fair outcomes. Its relevance therefore rests on both its early role in crypto-powered social media and the continuing debate over how online communities should reward participation.
