Amgen Inc. is one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, focused on developing and commercialising human therapeutics for serious diseases. The company helped establish the modern biotech industry with medicines made using advanced biological processes, and it remains known for treatments that address cancer, inflammation, kidney disease, bone health, cardiovascular risk, migraine, asthma and rare diseases.
Its older flagship products include Epogen and Aranesp, which stimulate red blood cell production, and Neupogen and Neulasta, which support white blood cell counts in patients receiving chemotherapy. Amgen also markets Enbrel and Otezla for inflammatory conditions, while Prolia and Xgeva are important therapies in bone health and oncology-related bone complications. In cancer, the company’s portfolio includes Vectibix and Kyprolis, the latter added through the acquisition of Onyx Pharmaceuticals.
Amgen has continued to refresh its product base through launches and acquisitions. Repatha targets cholesterol reduction, Aimovig is used for migraine prevention, Lumakras treats certain lung cancers with a specific genetic mutation, and Tezspire is used in severe asthma. The 2023 acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics expanded Amgen’s rare-disease business, adding products such as Tepezza for thyroid eye disease.
The company also has a growing biosimilars operation, which develops lower-cost versions of complex biologic medicines as patents expire across the industry. This gives Amgen exposure both to innovative branded drugs and to a segment designed to improve affordability and broaden access. Its investment profile is shaped by research productivity, regulatory approvals, patent cycles, pricing pressure and the ability to integrate acquired assets while sustaining growth from a diversified global portfolio.
