California Resources (CRC)
NYSE Market Closed
California Resources Corporation is an independent energy company focused on oil and natural gas production, primarily in California, with additional interests tied to other western US basins. Its portfolio includes mature fields and infrastructure across producing areas such as the San Joaquin, Los Angeles, Ventura, Sacramento, Salinas, and Uinta basins. Key California fields referenced in its asset base include Midway-Sunset, South Belridge, and McKittrick, all located in a state with a long history of hydrocarbon development and a highly regulated operating environment.
CRC’s main revenue driver is its oil and natural gas segment, which explores for, develops, produces, processes, and markets crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. The company’s assets are generally characterised by established reservoirs, existing field infrastructure, and ongoing development opportunities, rather than frontier exploration. Its performance is therefore influenced by commodity prices, production volumes, operating costs, environmental regulation, permitting, and California energy policy.
A distinctive part of CRC’s strategy is its carbon management business. The company seeks to use its subsurface expertise, land position, and reservoir knowledge to develop carbon capture and storage projects, including initiatives aimed at permanently storing captured carbon dioxide in suitable geologic formations. This activity is intended to create value from energy-transition services while supporting emissions-reduction goals for industrial customers.
For investors, CRC combines conventional upstream oil and gas exposure with a developing decarbonisation platform. The stock is tied to California’s complex energy market, where local production, environmental standards, carbon policy, and demand for lower-carbon industrial solutions all shape the company’s long-term opportunity set.
