eBay Inc. operates one of the world’s best-known online marketplaces, linking individual sellers, professional merchants and buyers across a wide range of product categories. Founded in 1995, the company helped popularise internet commerce through auctions and person-to-person selling, and it remains closely associated with used goods, collectibles, refurbished products, parts and hard-to-find items. Its platform spans more than 190 markets, giving it a broad international footprint as well as a large domestic business in the United States.
eBay does not generally hold inventory itself. Instead, it provides the marketplace infrastructure, search and listing tools, payments functionality, seller services, buyer protections and advertising products that enable transactions between third parties. The company earns most of its revenue from transaction-related fees charged when items are sold, supplemented by promoted listings and other advertising services that help sellers improve visibility.
In 2025, eBay generated $11.1 billion of revenue on nearly $80 billion of gross merchandise volume, with 135 million active buyers and 18 million active sellers. Just over half of revenue came from the US, with the rest generated internationally.
The company’s strategic focus includes categories where its marketplace has natural advantages, such as luxury resale, sneakers, trading cards, car parts and recommerce. Its announced $1.2 billion acquisition of fashion resale app Depop from Etsy in early 2026 reflects an effort to deepen its appeal to younger shoppers and strengthen its position in second-hand fashion. eBay competes with large ecommerce platforms, specialist resale apps and social commerce marketplaces.
