Exponent Inc. is a specialist consulting firm that applies science, engineering, health, and regulatory expertise to complex technical problems. The company is best known for work involving failure analysis, product safety, risk assessment, regulatory support, and litigation-related consulting. Its clients include corporations, insurers, government agencies, law firms, and other organisations that need independent technical analysis.
The company operates mainly through two business areas. Its engineering and other scientific segment is the larger contributor and covers disciplines such as biomechanics, biomedical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, construction consulting, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, human factors, and accident reconstruction. This work can involve investigating product failures, evaluating infrastructure issues, assessing vehicle or medical device performance, or helping clients understand the technical causes of incidents.
Exponent’s environmental and health segment focuses on areas including chemical regulation, food safety, toxicology, ecological sciences, environmental science, earth sciences, and health risk assessment. This segment supports clients facing regulatory filings, environmental claims, safety reviews, and scientific questions linked to chemicals, consumer products, industrial operations, and public health.
The firm’s business model depends on highly qualified consultants, many with advanced scientific or engineering credentials. Revenue is generated primarily from professional services, with demand driven by product development, regulation, disputes, recalls, accidents, and broader risk-management needs. Exponent generates most of its revenue in the United States, although its expertise can be applied to global matters. Its distinguishing feature is the breadth of technical disciplines it can combine when clients face problems that require rigorous, evidence-based analysis.
