Merck & Company Inc (MRK)
NYSE Market Closed
Merck & Co., Inc. is a global pharmaceutical company that develops and sells prescription medicines, vaccines, biologic therapies, and animal health products. The company, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, operates across major therapeutic areas including oncology, infectious disease, cardiometabolic disorders, immunology, and vaccines. Its scale, research base, and commercial reach make it one of the most important drugmakers in the global healthcare sector.
Merck’s largest growth driver is its oncology franchise, led by Keytruda, an immunotherapy used across multiple cancer types. Keytruda works by helping the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells, and it has become central to modern cancer treatment in many indications. Beyond oncology, Merck has a significant vaccines business, including products used in pediatric immunization and Gardasil, which helps protect against diseases caused by human papillomavirus.
The company also participates in infectious disease treatment and prevention, as well as selected areas of cardiometabolic care. In addition to human health, Merck operates an animal health division that supplies medicines, vaccines, and related products for livestock and companion animals, adding diversification beyond its core pharmaceutical portfolio.
Merck’s financial performance depends on patent protection, clinical trial success, regulatory approvals, pricing dynamics, and global healthcare demand. The United States is a major market for its human health products, but the company also sells extensively internationally. For investors, Merck represents exposure to a large research-driven pharmaceutical business with a leading cancer platform, a durable vaccines portfolio, and a meaningful presence in animal health.
