Virtu Financial, Inc. Class A represents an electronic trading and market-structure company that uses proprietary technology to provide liquidity across global financial markets. Virtu is best known for market making, where it continuously quotes buy and sell prices in securities and derivatives and seeks to earn small spreads across very large trading volumes. Its systems operate across equities, exchange-traded funds, options, fixed income, currencies, commodities, futures and other asset classes.
The company reports two main operating segments: Market Making and Execution Services. Market Making is the largest contributor to revenue and reflects Virtu’s role as a technology-driven liquidity provider on exchanges and other trading venues. This business can benefit from elevated market activity, wider spreads and volatility, although results may fluctuate with trading conditions and competition.
Execution Services provides institutional clients with trading tools, agency execution, analytics, workflow technology and related services. This segment broadens Virtu’s business beyond proprietary liquidity provision and connects the company with asset managers, brokers and other market participants seeking efficient execution and transparency. Virtu also maintains a corporate segment for non-operating activities.
Headquartered in the United States, Virtu has an international footprint, including operations in Ireland and other markets. Its business sits at the intersection of finance, data, software and regulation. For investors, the company is distinctive because it is not a traditional bank or asset manager; it is a capital-markets technology firm whose performance is closely tied to trading volumes, market volatility, exchange rules and the continued automation of global securities trading.
