Golub Capital BDC (GBDC)

The company’s investment objective is to produce current income and, where possible, capital appreciation. It pursues that goal mainly through senior secured loans and “one-stop” loans, which combine different layers of debt financing into a single credit facility. These structures are commonly used by middle-market borrowers that need flexible capital for acquisitions, growth initiatives, refinancing, or ownership transitions.

Golub Capital BDC may also invest in second-lien debt, subordinated loans, warrants, and minority equity positions. Because many of its investments are made to companies below the scale of large public issuers, the loans are generally rated below investment grade or would likely receive a below-investment-grade rating if formally assessed. This credit profile can offer higher yields but also exposes the portfolio to borrower, leverage, and economic-cycle risks.

As a BDC, the company distributes a substantial portion of its taxable income to shareholders and is structured to give public-market investors access to private credit. Its revenue is driven largely by interest income from the loan portfolio, along with fees and other investment-related income. While it may hold investments connected to Canada and other markets, its business is centered on lending to U.S. middle-market companies.
