Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII)

HII’s shipbuilding business is anchored by two historic yards. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi focuses on non-nuclear surface combatants and amphibious ships, including Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, America-class amphibious assault ships, and San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks. Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia is the sole builder of US nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and is deeply involved in aircraft carrier refueling and complex overhaul work. Newport News is also a key partner in nuclear submarine production, sharing work on Virginia-class and Columbia-class programs with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The company’s backlog and revenue profile are closely tied to multi-year defense budgets, congressional appropriations, Navy force-structure priorities, and the technical demands of large-scale ship construction. These programs often run for decades, creating high barriers to entry but also exposing the company to schedule, labor, supply-chain, and cost-performance risks.

Beyond traditional shipyards, HII operates a Mission Technologies segment that provides defense and intelligence customers with capabilities in uncrewed systems, cyber, command and control, training, artificial intelligence, and other technical services. This business broadens HII’s role from physical shipbuilding into advanced defense technology and government services, while keeping the company closely aligned with US national security spending.
