3M Company is a diversified industrial and technology manufacturer with a product portfolio that spans workplace safety, adhesives, abrasives, filtration, electrical materials, automotive components, electronics-related materials, and consumer goods. Founded in 1902, the company has built its identity around applied science, materials innovation, and the ability to adapt core technologies across many end markets. Well-known consumer products such as Post-it Notes and Scotch-branded tapes sit alongside industrial items used in factories, infrastructure, transportation, and electronics manufacturing.
The company operates through three main segments: Safety and Industrial, Transportation and Electronics, and Consumer. Safety and Industrial includes products such as personal protective equipment, industrial adhesives, tapes, abrasives, and closure systems. Transportation and Electronics serves automotive, aerospace, commercial solutions, semiconductor, electronics, and advanced materials customers. The Consumer segment includes home improvement, stationery, cleaning, and office products sold through retail and business channels.
3M’s competitive profile is shaped by its research and development culture, broad patent base, global manufacturing footprint, and longstanding customer relationships. Many of its products are embedded in customers’ processes, making performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance important differentiators. The company sells globally, with a substantial share of revenue generated outside the Americas, which gives it exposure to international industrial production and consumer demand.
Following the separation of its healthcare business into Solventum, 3M is more focused on industrial, transportation, electronics, safety, and consumer markets. Its financial performance can be influenced by manufacturing activity, raw material costs, supply chains, foreign exchange rates, product liability matters, and demand from automotive, electronics, construction, and general industrial customers.
