Duke Energy (DUK)
NYSE Market Closed
Duke Energy Corporation is one of the largest regulated utility companies in the United States. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company provides electricity to more than 8 million customers through utility subsidiaries serving the Carolinas, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It also operates natural gas utilities that serve more than 1.6 million customers.
Duke’s electric business spans generation, transmission, and distribution. Its power supply portfolio includes nuclear, natural gas, coal, hydroelectric, and renewable resources, making the company a major participant in the US electricity transition. Nuclear generation is an especially important part of Duke’s fleet in the Carolinas, while natural gas and renewables play a growing role as older coal assets are reduced over time. The company also invests heavily in grid reliability, storm hardening, and infrastructure upgrades across regions exposed to hurricanes, population growth, and rising electricity demand.
As a regulated utility, Duke earns most of its revenue from essential energy services rather than competitive retail markets. Its financial performance is closely tied to capital investment programs, rate cases, fuel costs, customer demand, weather, and decisions by state and federal regulators. The company’s large service territories include fast-growing areas in the Southeast, giving it a prominent position in debates over affordability, reliability, and decarbonisation. For investors, Duke Energy is primarily a scale utility business, combining dependable customer demand with the long-term capital needs of modernising the electric grid and replacing ageing generation assets.
