Dogecoin (DOGE)
Dogecoin is an open-source cryptocurrency that began as a light-hearted internet meme and developed into one of the most recognised digital assets in the market. Created in 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, it uses the Shiba Inu “Doge” meme as its public identity and is widely associated with small payments, online tipping, and community-led fundraising.
Technically, Dogecoin is a proof-of-work blockchain derived from LuckyCoin, which itself was based on Litecoin. It uses the Scrypt mining algorithm and produces blocks more quickly than Bitcoin, with a target block time of around one minute. Dogecoin also supports merged mining with Litecoin, allowing miners to help secure both networks at the same time and giving Dogecoin access to a larger mining base than it might otherwise sustain alone.
One of Dogecoin’s most distinctive economic features is its uncapped supply. New DOGE continues to enter circulation as block rewards, creating a predictable inflationary model rather than a fixed maximum supply. Supporters argue that this design helps keep transaction fees low and makes the currency more suitable for everyday transfers, while critics point to the constant issuance as a potential drag on scarcity.
Dogecoin is not controlled by a company. Development and advocacy are carried out by volunteers, contributors, and organisations such as the Dogecoin Foundation. Its value is shaped less by a formal roadmap than by network usage, exchange liquidity, cultural relevance, and the strength of its global community.
