Livepeer (LPT)

The Livepeer Token, LPT, is the protocol’s staking and coordination asset. It is not designed as the main payment currency for video broadcasting. Broadcasters pay fees to use the network, while node operators that perform work, often referred to as orchestrators or transcoders, earn fees for processing streams. LPT is staked by these operators and can also be delegated by token holders who want to support network participants without running infrastructure themselves.

Staking LPT helps determine how work is routed across the network. Operators with more delegated stake can receive a greater share of jobs, which gives the token an important role in network security and resource allocation. The staking model also creates accountability: participants are economically incentivised to perform work correctly, and protocol rules are designed to discourage dishonest or useless activity.

Livepeer’s long-term relevance depends on demand for decentralised media infrastructure. Video is one of the most resource-intensive categories of internet traffic, and applications in streaming, creator platforms, social media, gaming, and Web3 content distribution all require efficient processing. LPT gives holders exposure to a network that seeks to make video transcoding more open, programmable, and economically competitive.
