Ontology (ONT)

Ontology was launched by Onchain, a Chinese blockchain technology company associated with founders Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang, who are also known for their role in the creation of NEO. The project emerged during a period when many businesses were exploring how to adopt distributed ledger technology without replacing existing systems entirely. Ontology’s architecture is intended to make that transition easier by offering modular tools for identity verification, data exchange, and trust coordination across different networks.

The ecosystem operates with a dual-token structure. ONT is used for staking, governance, and participation in the network’s consensus model, while Ontology Gas (ONG) is used to pay for transactions and on-chain services. This model separates network ownership and governance from operational costs, giving the blockchain a dedicated utility token for activity while maintaining ONT as the main participation asset.

Ontology’s broader proposition is focused on trust in digital environments. Its infrastructure supports decentralized identity standards, verifiable credentials, and data-sharing mechanisms that can be applied in financial services, enterprise systems, and decentralized applications.
