CoW Protocol (COW)

The name refers to “coincidence of wants,” a concept in which two or more traders can have complementary orders. By using batch auctions and solver competition, CoW Protocol aims to reduce costs such as slippage, failed transactions, and certain forms of maximal extractable value, including front-running and sandwich attacks. Users typically sign orders off-chain, with settlement occurring on-chain only when a valid solution is found.

COW is the protocol’s governance and utility token. Holders participate in CowDAO, which helps oversee protocol parameters, ecosystem funding, product development priorities, and other decisions linked to the network’s infrastructure. The token also supports user incentives, including trading fee discounts on CoW Swap and related benefits where applicable.

Within the wider DeFi market, CoW Protocol occupies a niche between decentralized exchange aggregators and execution-protection tools. Its focus is not simply to find a price quote, but to improve how trades are settled. That makes COW closely tied to demand for transparent, non-custodial trading systems that can compete on execution quality as decentralized markets become more sophisticated.
