Filecoin (FIL)

The project is closely associated with Protocol Labs and the InterPlanetary File System, better known as IPFS. While IPFS provides a content-addressed way to locate and distribute files, Filecoin adds an economic layer that pays participants to store data reliably over time. Storage providers prove that they have committed physical capacity and continue to hold client data through cryptographic mechanisms such as Proof-of-Replication and Proof-of-Spacetime.

Filecoin’s market-based design is intended to make storage more like a commodity utility. Prices can be shaped by supply, demand, location, performance, and provider reputation, rather than by the fixed pricing schedules of large centralized platforms. This structure appeals to users who want redundancy, censorship resistance, or alternatives to conventional cloud storage.

The network has also expanded beyond basic file storage. The Filecoin Virtual Machine brings smart contract functionality to the ecosystem, enabling applications that combine programmable logic with stored data. This supports use cases such as data DAOs, archival storage, decentralized computing, and tokenized data services. Filecoin’s main distinction is its attempt to turn global hard-drive capacity into a permissionless, verifiable storage marketplace secured by crypto-economic incentives.
