Chainlink (LINK)
Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network that supplies blockchains with data and computation from outside their native environments. Smart contracts cannot independently verify information such as market prices, weather events, reserve balances, or payment messages, so Chainlink provides infrastructure that allows them to use external inputs in a more secure and reliable way.
The network works through independent node operators that retrieve data from multiple sources, validate it, and deliver aggregated results to smart contracts. This model reduces dependence on a single data provider and is widely used in decentralized finance, where lending markets, derivatives platforms, stablecoins, and automated trading systems require accurate price feeds. Chainlink Data Feeds are its best-known product, but the project has expanded into a broader platform for blockchain connectivity.
Chainlink’s services include Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) for messaging and token transfers between blockchains, Automation for triggering smart contract functions, Proof of Reserve for monitoring collateral, and tools aimed at institutional tokenization and compliance workflows. The project has worked with financial market participants and infrastructure providers including Swift, Euroclear, Mastercard, UBS, ANZ, Fidelity International, and J.P. Morgan on blockchain and tokenized asset initiatives.
LINK is the native token of the Chainlink ecosystem. It is used to pay node operators, support service subscriptions, and participate in staking mechanisms that are intended to strengthen network security and accountability. Chainlink was founded in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, with academic input from Ari Juels, and has become one of the most established middleware projects in crypto.
