AGNC Investment Corp. invests primarily in agency residential mortgage-backed securities. Its portfolio includes mortgage pass-through securities and collateralized mortgage obligations whose principal and interest payments are guaranteed by entities such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, or Ginnie Mae. Because these securities carry agency or government backing, AGNC’s core portfolio is less dependent on borrower credit performance than many other mortgage assets. However, the company’s results can still be highly sensitive to interest rates, hedging outcomes, prepayment speeds, financing markets, and changes in mortgage spreads.

The Series E preferred stock uses a fixed-to-floating dividend structure. It pays a fixed coupon for an initial period and then, according to its terms, transitions to a floating rate tied to a benchmark or replacement benchmark plus a spread. The cumulative feature means missed preferred dividends typically accumulate before common dividends can be paid, although payments depend on board authorization and the security’s governing documents. AGNCO therefore offers exposure to AGNC’s agency mortgage investment strategy through a preferred instrument whose income profile may change over time as rates and reset provisions take effect.
