Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (ALNY)
Nasdaq Market Closed
Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biotechnology company focused on RNA interference, or RNAi, a biological process that can reduce the activity of specific genes by targeting messenger RNA. The company applies this mechanism to develop medicines for diseases in which silencing a disease-related gene may alter the course of illness. Its work places it among the best-known developers of RNAi therapeutics, with a platform designed to identify genetic targets, create RNA-based drug candidates, and deliver them to relevant tissues, particularly the liver.
Alnylam has built a commercial portfolio around rare and specialty diseases. Its marketed products include Onpattro and Amvuttra for hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis, Givlaari for acute hepatic porphyria, and Oxlumo for primary hyperoxaluria type 1. These medicines reflect the company’s strategy of addressing serious conditions with clearly defined molecular drivers and limited treatment options. Alnylam also benefits from partnered products, including Leqvio for cholesterol management, commercialized by Novartis, and Qfitlia for hemophilia A or B, commercialized by Sanofi.
Beyond its approved therapies, Alnylam maintains a pipeline across cardio-metabolic disease, hematology, neuroscience, and other areas where gene silencing may have clinical value. Investors typically view the company through the lens of its RNAi platform, commercial execution, regulatory milestones, and the potential for pipeline expansion into larger markets. As with many biotechnology businesses, its valuation can be sensitive to clinical trial results, reimbursement trends, product uptake, and competition from other genetic medicine technologies.
