Lumen Technologies (LUMN)

Lumen has been reshaped by major portfolio changes over the past decade. Its 2017 combination with Level 3 Communications expanded its long-haul fiber network and strengthened its position in enterprise connectivity. Subsequent divestitures of local telephone and consumer-focused assets, including the sale of much of its rural incumbent carrier business and the planned sale of its remaining consumer fiber network to AT&T in 2026, move the company further away from legacy residential phone operations. As a result, enterprise services represent the large majority of revenue.

The company’s core role is to help customers move data reliably across locations, cloud platforms, data centers, and the public internet. Its offerings include wavelength and Ethernet services, IP transit, managed network products, unified communications, voice services, edge and data center connectivity, and cybersecurity tools. Lumen serves industries that require resilient communications infrastructure, such as financial services, healthcare, technology, manufacturing, and the public sector.

For investors, Lumen is viewed as a telecom infrastructure company in transition. Its opportunity lies in monetizing fiber capacity and enterprise demand for secure, high-bandwidth connectivity, while its challenges include debt, competition, pricing pressure, and the continuing decline of older voice and copper-based services.
