SARATOGA INVESTMENT (SAR)

Saratoga’s portfolio is built mainly around secured debt investments, including senior loans, unitranche structures and mezzanine financing. These instruments are designed to generate recurring interest income, while selected equity co-investments give the company an opportunity to benefit if a borrower grows or is sold at a higher valuation. As a BDC, Saratoga is required to distribute much of its taxable income to shareholders, making income generation a central part of its investment proposition.

The company’s strategy emphasises negotiated, privately originated investments rather than broadly syndicated loans. That approach can allow Saratoga to tailor covenants, pricing and capital structures to the needs of individual borrowers, although it also exposes shareholders to credit risk tied to smaller private companies and the economic cycle. Its performance is influenced by interest rates, portfolio credit quality, deal activity and access to financing. For investors, Saratoga represents exposure to private credit and U.S. middle-market lending through a listed equity security.
