Tyson Foods (TSN)
NYSE Market Closed
Tyson Foods, Inc. is one of the largest protein producers in the United States, supplying chicken, beef, pork, and prepared foods to retailers, restaurants, food-service distributors, and international customers. The company sits at the center of the food supply chain, with operations spanning animal procurement, processing, packaging, branded products, and distribution.
Chicken and beef are Tyson’s largest businesses, together accounting for the majority of sales. The chicken segment includes fresh, frozen, and value-added poultry products, while the beef and pork operations are more directly tied to livestock supply, processing margins, and wholesale protein demand. These commodity-driven businesses can be cyclical, as profitability is affected by feed costs, cattle and hog availability, labor expenses, export demand, and consumer prices.
Tyson also owns a sizeable prepared foods portfolio, which gives it exposure to higher-value branded and convenience-oriented categories. Its brands include Tyson, Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm, Ball Park, and Sara Lee, covering products such as breakfast sausage, hot dogs, deli meats, frozen meals, and other ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook foods. These businesses help diversify the company beyond raw protein, although many of the categories remain highly competitive and depend on retail shelf space, pricing, and brand execution.
The company’s sales are still heavily weighted toward the US market, with international operations representing a smaller share of revenue. Tyson has used acquisitions and investment to expand in food-service channels, prepared foods, and selected overseas markets. Its scale, processing capacity, and broad customer base make it a major participant in global protein markets.
