ICON (ICX)

The project’s key infrastructure is the ICON Cross-Chain Framework, which includes the ICON blockchain, the xCall general message passing system, and connections to supported bridging protocols and external networks. xCall is designed to let decentralized applications send verified messages across chains, enabling use cases such as cross-chain governance, token transfers, DeFi interactions, and multi-chain user experiences. This approach reflects a broader industry need: applications increasingly operate across several ecosystems, but cross-chain development remains complex and security-sensitive.

ICX is the native coin of the ICON network. It is used to pay transaction fees on the ICON blockchain and also plays a role in cross-chain messaging fees for applications that use the network’s interoperability tools. A portion of fees collected in ICX may be burned, linking network activity to the token’s economic model. ICX is also used in staking and governance, allowing participants to support validators and take part in network decision-making.

ICON’s distinctive position is its long-running focus on practical cross-chain infrastructure rather than a single isolated application environment. By combining an established L1 with messaging and bridge integrations, it provides developers with tools for building blockchain applications that can operate across multiple ecosystems.
