Tether Gold (XAUT)
Tether Gold (XAUT) is a tokenised gold asset designed to give blockchain users exposure to physical bullion without relying on traditional gold-market settlement rails. Each XAUT token represents ownership of one troy ounce of fine gold allocated to a specific physical bar, with the underlying metal held in secure vault storage in Switzerland. The product is issued by the Tether group and sits alongside its broader range of reserve-backed digital assets.
XAUT is available on public blockchains, including Ethereum as an ERC-20 token and TRON as a TRC-20 token, allowing holders to transfer gold exposure between compatible wallets, exchanges, and custody platforms. This makes it different from a conventional gold exchange-traded product: ownership can be moved on-chain, used within supporting crypto-market infrastructure, and held directly in a digital wallet rather than only through a brokerage account.
The asset is aimed at investors who want the scarcity and long history of gold combined with the portability of a crypto token. Holders can use XAUT as a hedge against currency weakness, market stress, or inflation concerns, while still operating inside the digital asset ecosystem. Tether Gold does not remove all risks associated with tokenised commodities, including issuer, custody, liquidity, and regulatory risk, but its structure is intended to link each token to identifiable physical bullion rather than to a synthetic gold price. Its main distinction is the attempt to bridge two markets that often attract similar demand for non-sovereign stores of value: precious metals and blockchain-based assets.
