Costco Wholesale Corp is one of the world’s largest warehouse-club retailers, built around a paid membership model that gives shoppers access to a limited selection of merchandise sold at very competitive prices. The company operates large-format warehouses in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and several other international markets, with the US remaining by far its largest revenue base.
Costco’s retail formula differs from traditional supermarkets and big-box chains. It keeps stock-keeping units relatively low, buys in large volumes, and emphasizes rapid inventory turnover. This approach supports low markups and allows the company to use membership fees as an important profit driver. High renewal rates in the US, Canada, and international markets demonstrate the strength of the customer relationship and help make revenue more recurring than at many retailers.
The company sells groceries, fresh food, household essentials, apparel, electronics, appliances, furniture, jewelry, fuel, pharmacy products, optical services, and travel-related offerings. Its Kirkland Signature private-label brand is central to its value proposition and spans categories from food and beverages to batteries, clothing, and household goods.
Costco is also known for a disciplined operating culture, strong store productivity, and a focus on delivering value rather than maximizing short-term margins. Its scale, loyal membership base, and reputation for quality at low prices make it a distinctive player in global retail.
