Equifax, Incorporated is a major data, analytics, and credit reporting company best known as one of the three nationwide consumer credit bureaus in the United States, alongside Experian and TransUnion. Its core role is to collect and organize credit information on consumers and businesses, then provide reports, scores, identity tools, and decisioning data to banks, card issuers, auto lenders, mortgage providers, insurers, employers, and other customers that need to assess risk or verify information.
The company’s services are deeply embedded in lending workflows. Credit files and related analytics help lenders evaluate applications, price loans, manage portfolios, detect fraud, and comply with regulatory requirements. Equifax also serves commercial clients with business credit data, marketing services, and risk management products.
A distinctive part of Equifax’s business is its workforce solutions operation, which includes income and employment verification services used in mortgage origination, tenant screening, hiring, government benefits administration, and other processes where verified payroll or job information is important. This segment gives Equifax exposure beyond traditional credit reporting and makes the company a key provider of verification infrastructure for employers and institutions.
Although the United States is its largest market, Equifax also operates internationally, with meaningful revenue from markets outside the country. Its global footprint, large proprietary databases, and long-standing relationships with financial institutions support its competitive position. The company’s performance is tied to credit activity, employment verification demand, consumer finance trends, and the continued use of data-driven decision-making across the financial system.
