PayPal’s core platform allows users to pay with stored balances, bank accounts, cards, and other funding sources without sharing full payment credentials with each merchant. For businesses, it provides payment acceptance tools, fraud and risk management, dispute handling, and access to a large base of active consumer accounts. The company earns much of its revenue from transaction fees and related payment services.

The business includes several major products and subsidiaries. Venmo is PayPal’s social peer-to-peer payments app in the United States and has expanded into merchant payments and debit or credit products. Braintree supports card and digital wallet processing for large and technology-oriented merchants, while Xoom focuses on international money transfers. PayPal has also participated in newer areas of finance, including buy now, pay later products and digital asset services in selected markets.

PayPal reported 439 million active accounts at the end of 2025, underscoring the scale of its two-sided network. Its competitive position rests on brand recognition, merchant acceptance, consumer trust, regulatory compliance, and the ability to keep pace with card networks, banks, fintech platforms, and mobile wallet providers.
