Unum (UNM)

Unum is best known for disability insurance, a market in which it is one of the leading providers in the US. Much of its premium base comes from employer-sponsored plans, where policies are distributed through brokers, consultants, and workplace benefit platforms. This gives the company a strong link to employment trends, wage growth, and corporate benefit spending.

The group reports through several segments. Unum USA is its largest business and includes group disability, group life and accidental death, supplemental and voluntary benefits, and dental and vision products. Colonial Life sells voluntary benefits primarily to employees at the worksite, often serving small and mid-sized employers. Unum International covers operations outside the US, while the Closed Block contains older long-term care and other legacy insurance lines that are managed separately from newer business.

For investors, Unum represents an established insurer with exposure to the employee benefits market rather than a broad property-and-casualty or investment-focused model.
