Google builds new subsea cable network to power India's AI push

Google is expanding its digital infrastructure footprint in India as artificial intelligence increases demand for faster and more reliable connectivity.

The company has announced America India Connect, a major initiative backed by its five-year, $15 billion AI infrastructure investment in India.

Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai presented the plans during a high-profile artificial intelligence summit in New Delhi attended by government leaders and technology executives.

The project focuses on strengthening digital links between India and global networks while improving reliability and capacity.

The initiative will introduce new subsea cable routes and fibre optic connections linking India with the United States, Africa, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

These upgrades are designed to increase resilience and reduce network disruptions.

By strengthening these routes, Google aims to improve connectivity that supports economic growth, digital services, and AI adoption across regions.

Vizag emerges as key subsea hub

Visakhapatnam will play a central role in the expansion as Google establishes a new international subsea gateway on India’s east coast.

The project includes fibre optic routes linking Vizag directly with Chennai, Singapore, and South Africa.

These connections will integrate with subsea cable systems in Equiano, Nuvem, Bosun, and Tabua.

Together, they will create new pathways linking Vizag to both the American East Coast through Africa and the American West Coast through Australia and the Pacific region.

The addition of a new gateway strengthens network diversity beyond existing landing points in Mumbai and Chennai.

This reduces reliance on limited routes and improves stability.

Mumbai routes strengthen global data corridors

Google is also expanding connectivity along India’s West Coast through a direct fibre optic path linking Mumbai with Western Australia.

This route will work alongside the TalayLink and Honomoana cable systems to create a digital corridor connecting the American West Coast to Mumbai.

The expansion complements existing subsea systems such as Blue, Raman, and Sol, which connect Mumbai to global networks through the Red Sea.

Multiple routes ensure traffic can be redirected if disruptions occur, improving reliability and preventing outages.

Digital skills and AI access expand nationwide

Google’s infrastructure push is also linked to workforce readiness and digital skills development.

The company is working with Karmayogi Bharat, the Government of India’s digital training initiative, to strengthen access to AI-enabled learning.

Google Cloud provides infrastructure support for the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which serves more than 20 million public servants across over 800 districts.

The system delivers scalable training services and supports nationwide digital transformation.

AI capabilities will improve search and access to training resources while enabling learning in more than 18 Indian languages.

Digitisation of legacy training content will help officials access structured knowledge more efficiently.

By combining infrastructure expansion with digital training, Google is strengthening the foundation needed for broader AI adoption.

These investments improve connectivity while enabling institutions and individuals to use digital technologies more effectively, reinforcing India’s position in global digital networks.
