Api3 (API3)
Api3 is a decentralised oracle project that connects blockchain applications with real-world data through first-party data feeds. Oracles are a critical part of the smart contract economy because blockchains cannot natively access external information such as market prices, weather data, sports results, or financial benchmarks. Api3 focuses on supplying this information directly from data providers rather than relying on third-party middlemen to relay it.
The project is best known for its dAPIs, or decentralised APIs, which are designed to deliver transparent and verifiable data to decentralised applications. Api3 also develops Airnode, an oracle node technology that allows API providers to connect their data services to blockchain networks with less operational complexity. This first-party model is intended to improve accountability and reduce the number of intermediaries between the data source and the smart contract using the data.
A distinctive part of Api3’s approach is its focus on Oracle Extractable Value, or OEV. OEV refers to value that can arise when oracle price updates affect on-chain markets, especially in lending and derivatives protocols. Api3 aims to help protocols recapture some of this value rather than allowing it to leak to external actors, creating a potential additional benefit for applications that use its oracle services.
The API3 token is used within the project’s governance and staking framework, supporting the decentralised management of the network and its services. Api3’s role in the crypto ecosystem is therefore tied to the broader demand for reliable, transparent, and economically efficient oracle infrastructure.
