Litecoin (LTC)
Litecoin is a decentralized peer-to-peer cryptocurrency created as a faster and lighter alternative to Bitcoin. Launched in 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, it is one of the longest-running digital assets in the market and remains widely recognized as a payment-focused cryptocurrency. Like Bitcoin, Litecoin operates without a central issuer, bank, or payment processor, relying instead on an open network of miners and nodes to validate transactions.
The Litecoin blockchain uses proof of work to secure the ledger. Its blocks are produced roughly every 2.5 minutes, compared with Bitcoin’s 10-minute target, which allows transactions to receive confirmations more quickly. Litecoin also uses the Scrypt hashing algorithm rather than Bitcoin’s SHA-256, a design choice originally intended to broaden mining participation. The maximum supply is capped at 84 million LTC, four times Bitcoin’s limit, and miner rewards are reduced through scheduled halving events.
LTC is used to transfer value globally, pay merchants, move funds between exchanges, and hold a liquid digital asset with a long operating history. The network is known for relatively low transaction fees, making it suitable for smaller payments and frequent transfers. Litecoin has also served as a testing ground for technologies later associated with broader cryptocurrency adoption, including Segregated Witness and Lightning Network experimentation.
A notable feature is MimbleWimble Extension Blocks, which give users an optional way to improve transaction privacy by obscuring certain details. Supported by the non-profit Litecoin Foundation and a decentralized developer community, Litecoin’s market role is that of a durable, payment-oriented cryptocurrency with high exchange availability and a conservative technical identity.
