Stacks (STX)
Stacks is a blockchain ecosystem that brings smart contracts and decentralised applications to Bitcoin. Instead of trying to replace Bitcoin, Stacks is designed to extend its utility by enabling programmable applications that can use Bitcoin as a secure settlement and value layer. This makes it one of the best-known projects focused on building a broader application economy around the world’s largest cryptocurrency network.
The Stacks network supports smart contracts through Clarity, a language built to make contract behaviour more transparent and predictable. Applications on Stacks can include decentralised finance tools, digital identity systems, NFT marketplaces, and other services that benefit from blockchain-based execution while remaining connected to Bitcoin. Its architecture is intended to let developers build applications that are controlled by code and accessible to users without relying on a central company as operator.
STX is the native asset of the Stacks network. It is used to pay transaction fees, execute smart contracts, and participate in the network’s economic design. Stacks is also known for its connection to Bitcoin through its consensus approach, which anchors network activity to Bitcoin and enables participants to earn Bitcoin rewards through the process known as stacking, subject to protocol rules.
As a crypto asset, STX is closely linked to the idea that Bitcoin can support more than simple transfers and long-term storage of value. Its importance depends on developer activity, user demand for Bitcoin-secured applications, and the broader market’s appetite for decentralised finance and Web3 services built around Bitcoin rather than separate base-layer ecosystems.
