Aflac (AFL)
NYSE Market Closed
Aflac Inc. is a supplemental insurance company with major operations in Japan and the United States. Its products are designed to help policyholders cover expenses that may not be fully addressed by primary health insurance or national healthcare systems, such as out-of-pocket medical costs, lost income, and other financial pressures caused by illness or injury.
The company is especially well known for cancer insurance, a product category that has played a central role in its growth in Japan. Over time, Aflac has expanded its portfolio to include accident, hospital indemnity, dental and vision, short-term disability, life, and long-term care-related coverage. These policies are often sold as voluntary benefits through employers, giving workers the option to buy additional protection at the workplace. Aflac also uses brokers, agencies, financial institutions, and digital channels to reach consumers beyond traditional worksite sales.
Aflac reports its business primarily through Aflac Japan and Aflac U.S., with Japan generally representing the larger contribution to revenue. This geographic structure makes the company distinctive among US-listed insurers, as it combines a significant Japanese franchise with a large American supplemental benefits business. Currency movements, healthcare trends, employment levels, persistency, claims experience, and investment returns all influence results.
For investors, AFL offers exposure to a specialised insurance model built around recurring premiums, brand recognition, and distribution strength. Its policies occupy a niche between core medical coverage and personal financial protection, making the company’s value proposition closely linked to consumers’ desire for additional security when health events disrupt household finances.
