Walmart Inc. is the world’s largest retailer, combining a vast physical store network with a growing digital commerce operation. Founded in 1962, the company operates thousands of Walmart stores, supercenters, neighbourhood markets, and Sam’s Club warehouse locations, while also serving customers through online ordering, delivery, pickup, and marketplace services. Its scale gives it significant purchasing power, broad supplier relationships, and a central role in everyday consumer spending.
The company reports through three main segments: Walmart U.S., Walmart International, and Sam’s Club. Walmart U.S. is the largest contributor, anchored by grocery, household essentials, health and wellness, apparel, electronics, and general merchandise. Grocery is especially important because it drives frequent customer visits and supports Walmart’s position as a value-focused destination. Sam’s Club adds a membership-based warehouse model, selling bulk goods and services to households and small businesses.
Internationally, Walmart operates in select markets, with a major presence in Mexico and exposure to growth areas such as India through its digital commerce investments. The company has also built out advertising, fulfilment, financial services, and third-party marketplace capabilities, aiming to turn its store base and customer traffic into higher-margin revenue streams.
Walmart’s competitive strength comes from price leadership, supply-chain efficiency, store density, and omnichannel convenience. It competes with supermarkets, discount chains, warehouse clubs, online marketplaces, and specialist retailers. For investors, Walmart represents a defensive consumer staples and retail platform with exposure to groceries, e-commerce adoption, membership income, and the continued modernisation of physical retail.
