Merlin Chain (MERL)
Merlin Chain (MERL) is a Bitcoin Layer 2 project designed to expand what can be built around Bitcoin without trying to replace Bitcoin’s base layer. Its goal is to bring greater transaction capacity and application support to Bitcoin-linked assets by using Layer 2 infrastructure, including rollup technology, oracle networks, and fraud-proof mechanisms. In practice, Merlin Chain aims to make Bitcoin more usable for decentralised finance, gaming, trading, and other on-chain applications that require faster or more flexible execution than Bitcoin Layer 1 can normally provide.
The network is closely associated with the growth of Bitcoin-native assets and protocols, including categories such as Ordinals, inscriptions, and token standards that have increased demand for Bitcoin block space. By offering a separate execution environment, Merlin Chain seeks to help these assets move across applications while still maintaining a connection to Bitcoin’s security and settlement ecosystem. Its design also supports developers that want to build with Bitcoin liquidity while using tools more familiar from smart contract networks.
MERL is the native asset of the Merlin Chain ecosystem. It is used to align participants around the network’s growth and may be associated with functions such as ecosystem incentives, governance, or participation in network operations, depending on the implementation of the protocol. Merlin Chain’s distinctive position is its focus on making Bitcoin a more active application platform, not just a store-of-value network. That places MERL within the wider trend of Bitcoin Layer 2 projects competing to unlock new use cases for BTC and related digital assets.
