NEAR Protocol (NEAR)

NEAR’s core architecture uses sharding to split network workload across multiple segments, allowing the blockchain to process activity more efficiently as demand grows. This design supports fast finality and low transaction costs, two features that are important for consumer apps, gaming, social platforms, payments, and AI-driven services that may require frequent on-chain interactions. The NEAR token is used for network fees, staking, validator incentives, and governance participation within the ecosystem.

The project’s AI strategy centres on the idea of user-owned AI. Rather than intelligent agents being controlled only by large platforms, NEAR aims to provide rails for agents that can act on behalf of users while remaining tied to user permissions, assets, and preferences. Its work on intents and chain abstraction is intended to let users express an outcome, such as swapping assets or completing a transaction, without needing to manage the underlying blockchain steps manually.

NEAR also supports interoperability across Web3 through tools that help applications communicate with multiple chains and onboard users from Web2 environments. This combination of scalable execution, account usability, chain abstraction, and AI-focused infrastructure makes NEAR one of the more distinctive smart contract networks competing to support the next generation of decentralised applications.
