Ordinals make it possible to attach data to individual satoshis, enabling inscriptions that can represent collectibles, tokens, and other digital artefacts directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. SATS is associated with the BRC-20 token standard, an experimental format that uses Ordinals inscriptions to create fungible tokens on Bitcoin. This places SATS in a category that differs from traditional smart-contract tokens on networks such as Ethereum, because its issuance and transfers rely on Bitcoin’s base chain and indexers that interpret inscription data.

The asset is best understood as a market-traded token inspired by Bitcoin’s smallest unit rather than as a replacement for bitcoin itself. Its appeal is tied to the growth of Bitcoin-based tokenisation, the popularity of Ordinals, and demand for assets that draw on Bitcoin’s brand, liquidity, and security assumptions. At the same time, BRC-20 tokens are relatively new and can involve technical, liquidity, and infrastructure risks. SATS therefore represents a speculative expression of activity around Ordinals and the broader effort to expand what can be issued and traded on Bitcoin.
