Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
NasdaqMarket Closed
Advanced Micro Devices, better known as AMD, is a major US semiconductor designer whose chips are used across personal computers, servers, game consoles, embedded systems and high-performance computing. The company does not manufacture its own processors; instead, it relies on advanced foundry partners while focusing on chip architecture, design and platform development.
AMD is best known for central processing units and graphics processing units. Its Ryzen processors compete in desktop and laptop PCs, while its EPYC server chips are used by cloud providers, enterprises and high-performance computing customers. In graphics, the Radeon brand serves gamers, creators and professional users. The company also supplies custom chips for leading gaming consoles, including Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox, giving it an important role in the interactive entertainment hardware market.
Artificial intelligence has become a central part of AMD’s strategy. The company is expanding its accelerator portfolio for data centres, where customers require specialised hardware to train and run large AI models. This puts AMD in direct competition with other leading chip designers in one of the fastest-growing areas of semiconductor demand. Its acquisition of Xilinx also broadened the business into adaptive computing, field-programmable gate arrays and embedded solutions for industrial, automotive, communications and aerospace applications.
AMD’s position is distinctive because it spans CPUs, GPUs, adaptive chips and semi-custom silicon. The company benefits from demand for more powerful computing, but it also operates in a cyclical and highly competitive industry where product execution, manufacturing access and customer adoption are critical. Its performance is closely watched as a barometer for PC demand, cloud infrastructure spending, gaming hardware cycles and the buildout of AI computing capacity.
