DoorDash, Inc. operates one of the largest local commerce and delivery marketplaces in the United States. The company’s platform connects consumers, restaurants, retailers, grocers, convenience stores, and independent couriers, allowing users to order meals and everyday goods for delivery or pickup through its app and website. DoorDash began with restaurant delivery, but its marketplace has expanded into categories such as grocery, alcohol, flowers, pet supplies, and general retail.
The company earns revenue from marketplace fees, merchant services, advertising products, subscriptions, and logistics offerings. DashPass, its membership programme, is designed to increase order frequency by offering benefits such as reduced delivery fees at participating merchants. DoorDash also provides tools that help businesses manage online ordering, reach customers, and fulfil demand without building their own delivery networks.
DoorDash has broadened its international footprint, notably through the acquisition of Wolt, a Helsinki-based delivery platform with operations across parts of Europe and Asia. That deal extended the company’s model beyond its North American base and added a brand with strong regional knowledge in several urban markets.
The business is defined by scale, logistics technology, and dense local networks. DoorDash must balance consumer prices, courier earnings, merchant economics, and service reliability while competing with other delivery platforms and retailers’ own digital channels. It also continues to test newer fulfilment methods and operational improvements, including automation and drone delivery partnerships, as it seeks to make local delivery faster, more efficient, and more widely available.
