Aztec (AZTEC)
Aztec is a privacy-focused Layer 2 project for Ethereum that aims to let developers build blockchain applications where transaction logic and user data can remain confidential. Rather than treating privacy as an add-on, Aztec is designed around zero-knowledge cryptography, enabling applications that can prove correctness without exposing every detail on a public ledger. This makes the project relevant to areas such as private DeFi, payments, identity, tokenised assets, and regulated financial workflows that require both auditability and data protection.
The project is closely associated with major advances in zero-knowledge research. Aztec’s team helped create PLONK, a widely used SNARK proving system introduced in 2019 that reduced complexity for developers by using a universal trusted setup. PLONK and related “PLONKish” systems have influenced a broad range of blockchain projects, including scaling and privacy-focused networks across the crypto industry.
Aztec Labs also develops Noir, a Rust-inspired programming language for writing zero-knowledge circuits. Noir is intended to make zk application development more accessible, allowing engineers to express privacy-preserving logic without working directly with low-level cryptographic primitives. Its adoption by projects beyond Aztec gives the ecosystem a role that extends past a single chain or application.
Aztec has attracted significant venture backing, including a Series B round led by Andreessen Horowitz, and its technology has drawn interest from institutions exploring confidential blockchain infrastructure. For investors and users, Aztec stands out as a project focused on the long-term need for private, programmable finance on public blockchains.
