BUSD (BUSD)
BUSD is a US dollar-pegged stablecoin associated with the Binance ecosystem and originally issued by Paxos Trust Company under the Binance USD brand. It is designed to track the value of one US dollar, giving crypto users a tokenised dollar instrument for trading, transfers, settlement, and portfolio management without needing to move directly in and out of bank deposits for every transaction.
The stablecoin is backed by reserves intended to support one-for-one redemption, with each BUSD representing a claim on an equivalent amount of US dollar value when redeemed through the appropriate issuer or platform channels. Paxos, a regulated trust company in New York, launched BUSD with oversight from the New York State Department of Financial Services, which helped distinguish it from many less-regulated stablecoin projects during its growth phase.
BUSD became widely used across Binance’s products and markets, including spot trading pairs, derivatives collateral, payments, and decentralised finance activity on supported blockchains. In addition to the Paxos-issued Ethereum token, Binance also supported wrapped or pegged versions for use on networks such as BNB Chain, expanding its utility across DeFi applications and exchange infrastructure.
The asset’s market role changes after regulators directed Paxos to stop minting new BUSD in 2023. Existing tokens continue to be relevant for holders, redemptions, and legacy market liquidity, but BUSD is no longer expanding in the same way as actively issued stablecoins. For investors and traders, its key characteristics are its dollar peg, historical regulatory structure, exchange integration, and the need to monitor redemption support and liquidity conditions.
