The Graph (GRT)
The Graph is a decentralised data indexing protocol designed to make blockchain information easier for applications to search and use. Instead of requiring developers to build and maintain custom infrastructure for every blockchain query, The Graph lets them create and access open APIs known as subgraphs. These subgraphs organise data from supported networks and make it available through GraphQL, a widely used query language.
The protocol plays an infrastructure role in the Web3 economy. Decentralised applications in areas such as DeFi, NFTs, DAOs and on-chain analytics can use The Graph to retrieve information including token balances, transaction histories, liquidity pool data and governance activity. By standardising access to blockchain data, The Graph helps developers build applications that rely more heavily on public, decentralised infrastructure rather than centralised servers.
GRT is the native token used to coordinate incentives across the network. Indexers operate nodes, stake GRT and process queries for applications. Delegators can support Indexers by delegating tokens to them and sharing in network rewards, while Curators signal which subgraphs are useful by allocating GRT to them. This design creates a marketplace in which different participants help identify, organise and serve valuable blockchain data.
Originally launched as an Ethereum-based token, GRT remains closely associated with the broader Ethereum and Web3 developer ecosystem, though The Graph has expanded its indexing services across multiple blockchain networks. Its importance comes from solving a practical problem: blockchains are transparent, but raw on-chain data is difficult to use at scale. The Graph aims to turn that data into accessible, reliable infrastructure for decentralised applications.
