Railgun (RAIL)

Unlike privacy systems that depend on a separate layer-2 network or external bridge, Railgun operates through smart contracts on existing chains. It uses zk-SNARK technology to allow users to create private balances and then transact from those balances. This means a user can send tokens, trade on decentralised exchanges, or interact with lending protocols while reducing the amount of wallet-level information visible to the public.

The protocol is aimed at DeFi users who want confidentiality without leaving the security environment of the base chain. Public blockchains make transaction histories permanently visible, which can expose trading strategies, portfolio movements, payroll activity, or operational treasury flows. Railgun addresses that transparency problem while remaining compatible with smart contract ecosystems.

RAIL is the utility and governance-related token for the Railgun ecosystem. Token holders who stake RAIL can participate in protocol governance and may receive treasury-related rewards, depending on the system’s rules and activity. Governance participation gives stakers a role in decisions about upgrades and protocol direction.

Railgun has been deployed across multiple major blockchain environments, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, and Arbitrum. Its main distinction is its fully on-chain approach to transaction privacy for DeFi, offering shielded activity without requiring users to trust a custodial mixer, centralised service, or independent bridge network.
